Project Context:
The 12 Sunsets: Exploring Ed Ruscha’s Archive project presents more than 65,000 photographs taken along Sunset Boulevard between 1965 and 2007, drawn from the Streets of Los Angeles archive acquired by the Getty in 2012. This interactive resource allows users to navigate and compare geotagged images across twelve distinct years, offering rich opportunities for urban, art, and cultural heritage research.
Scope & Key Activities:
Takin.solutions produced comprehensive semantic documentation for the 12 Sunsets dataset as modelled and stored in an Arches instance, including:
-
Analysing the existing Arches semantic model supporting the 12 Sunsets dataset.
-
Documenting how the model represents image metadata, geospatial coordinates, OCR‑extracted text, and tagging structures to support discovery and research.
-
Aligning the documentation with CIDOC CRM and Linked Art modelling practices to ensure interoperability and clarity.
-
Creating explanatory materials linking model components to research use cases and data access patterns.
Outcome:
The project delivered standardized semantic documentation for the 12 Sunsets Arches implementation, enabling users, developers, and researchers to understand, reuse, and integrate the dataset within broader cultural heritage semantic environments, enhancing discoverability and long‑term research value.
