Pharos Project: Art Research Platform Conceptual Modelling and Ontology Engineering

Project Context:

Takin.solutions supported the Pharos consortium in developing a unified semantic framework for integrating partner archives into a common knowledge base for art historical research. The project has since resulted in the creation of the Art Research platform (https://artresearch.net/resource/:start), a major international resource for accessing and linking archival data across institutions.

TAKIN’s Role:

  • Conducted detailed conceptual modelling across the consortium’s partner archives.

  • Performed semantic data analysis, including field-level mappings and recommendations for pre- and post-processing of heterogeneous datasets.

  • Developed a local ontological extension for Pharos based on CIDOC CRM and relevant extensions.

  • Documented emergent reference models and general patterns to support interoperability and reuse.

Deliverables:

  • Institution- and source-level analyses with semantic mappings.

  • Diagrammatic representations of source mappings.

  • Local ontology extension and reference model documentation.

Outcomes:

  • Harmonized semantic framework across multiple international partner archives.

  • Supported the creation of interoperable, reusable datasets for research and archival purposes.

  • Contributed to the establishment of the Art Research platform, providing a global resource for exploring, linking, and analyzing archival and provenance data.
